If you’re on the hunt for dog-friendly adventures in northern Utah, look no further than Snowbasin Resort- a must-add to you and your pup’s summer bucket list. Located in the picturesque Ogden area, this resort offers more than just breathtaking views. With over 26 miles of scenic hiking trails, a dog-friendly gondola ride, and a wide range of events that cater to both you and your furry friend, Snowbasin is the perfect destination for a memorable day out.
Established in the 1940s, Snowbasin Resort spans an expansive 3,000 acres in the heart of Utah’s Wasatch mountains. While it’s best known for its world-class ski terrain during the winter months, the resort truly comes alive in the summertime. The warmer season transforms Snowbasin into a haven of outdoor activities. Whether you’re trekking through the lush trails, taking in panoramic views from the gondola, or participating in one of the many dog-friendly events, Snowbasin offers a unique blend of adventure and relaxation, making it an ideal day trip for both you and your dog.
Getting there
Situated less than an hour’s drive from Salt Lake City and a mere 20 miles from Ogden, dog friendly Snowbasin Resort is conveniently accessible with a quick detour off I-15 and I-84. Parking at the resort is free and plentiful during the summer. The best address for navigation purposes is 3925 E Snowbasin Road Huntsville, UT 84317.
Dog friendly gondola
Utah’s only dog-friendly gondola takes you up to nearly 9000 feet in elevation with great views of several peaks in the northern Wasatch, as well as Pineview Reservoir down below. Each human will need a $29 gondola ticket to hop aboard-no ticket is needed for dogs.

What to expect
The Needles Gondola loads just outside the Grizzly Center, the bustling base hub at Snowbasin. Before boarding, the friendly Snowbasin staff will scan your ticket and guide you to the next available gondola. Each gondola comfortably fits 2-4 people and 1-2 dogs, and is reserved exclusively for your party.
As the gondolas remain in continuous motion during boarding, you’ll need to help your leashed dog step into or be carried into the slow-moving cabin. Don’t worry if it takes a few tries—Snowbasin staff are more than willing to assist, even stopping the gondola if necessary to ensure your dog boards safely.
Once aboard, you can flip up one of the benches and open the upper windows to make your 12-minute ascent to the summit more comfortable. As you climb, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of Mt. Ogden above and the Ogden Valley, including Pineview Reservoir, below. When you reach the summit, the gondola doors will open automatically, allowing you and your pup to step out at Needles Lodge.
When you’re ready to head back down, simply return to the offloading dock to board the gondola for a scenic descent back to the plaza below.
Needles Lodge
The majestic Needles Lodge serves as the mountain-top hub for Snowbasin’s summer activities. While the stunning patio and highly-praised Sunday brunch are not dog-friendly at this time, there’s still plenty to enjoy. Be sure to take your dog around to the back patio of the lodge for some unforgettable photos of the panoramic views below.

Dog friendly events
Snowbasin hosts several dog-friendly summer events, including the popular Blues & Brews concert series and SnowWiesn, Snowbasin’s Oktoberfest celebration. Be sure to check Snowbasin’s website for current dates and event details. Bonus: If you have an Ikon Pass, you can use one of your two complimentary summer tickets for eligible events.

Blues & Brews
Spend your Sunday in the mountains at Snowbasin’s Blues & Brews, one of Utah’s favorite dog-friendly summer traditions. Held every Sunday from June 20 through August 23, from 12-6PM, the festival features live blues music, craft beer from more than 10 local breweries, delicious food vendors, and plenty of space to relax with your pup while taking in the alpine scenery.
Bring a blanket or camp chairs and settle in for the afternoon. Shade can be limited, so a small shade canopy is a good idea if you’re planning to stay for the day. Outside food and beverages are not permitted, but you’ll find a variety of food and drink options available throughout the festival.
Admission requires a ticket, with options including single-day tickets, gondola tickets, and season passes. Dogs attend free and do not need a ticket, but they must remain leashed at all times. Because Blues & Brews is one of Snowbasin’s most popular summer events, it’s best suited for dogs that are comfortable around crowds, other dogs, and live music.
SnowWiesn Oktoberfest
If there’s one event beer-drinking dog owners look forward to all year, it’s SnowWiesn at Snowbasin. As Utah’s only dog-friendly Oktoberfest, this annual celebration brings together live music, authentic German food, local craft beer, Bavarian-inspired festivities, and a vendor market, all surrounded by stunning fall mountain scenery. The festivities take place every Saturday & Sunday from August 29-October 11 from 12-6pm.
Your dog is welcome to join at no additional cost. During your visit, you can:
- Relax together on the lawn while enjoying live music.
- Grab food and drinks at the outdoor picnic tables.
- Browse the vendor market.
- Dogtoberfest on September 5-6.
Dogs do not require a ticket and must remain leashed throughout the event. Because SnowWiesn is one of Snowbasin’s most popular weekends, it’s best suited for dogs that are comfortable around crowds, other dogs, and a lively atmosphere.
Hiking at Snowbasin with your dog
Snowbasin Resort offers over 3,000 acres of stunning terrain, making it an ideal destination for hiking with your dog. With more than 26 miles of trails within the resort boundaries—and even more in the adjacent national forest—there’s something for everyone. Popular trails include Green Pond, Snowbasin Trail, and the Ridge Trail, each offering a unique experience and breathtaking views.
The trails are marked with green, blue, and black color coding on the trail map, allowing you to choose a route that matches your skill level. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced hiker, you’ll find a trail that suits your pace.
Snowbasin is a cherished recreation hub, not only for hikers and mountain bikers but also for the local wildlife. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all, dogs must remain on a leash at all times.
