Christmas is around the corner and all the glorious things that come with it- like the smell of a freshly cut Christmas tree filling your home. Despite being known for its mountainous terrain, Utah is by no means a hotspot for Christmas tree farms but we’ve rounded all of the dog friendly Christmas tree farms near Salt Lake City.

Certainly, there will be plenty of lots offering pre-cut trees for purchase, but there is something special about taking your family to a farm to pick out your own Christmas tree. And if you’re here you probably consider your dog an integral part of that family unit (who absolutely deserves a visit from Santa Claus).

So where in Utah can you take your dog to find a live Christmas tree? There are several dog friendly Christmas tree farms within easy drive of Salt Lake. These trees typically sell out quickly so make sure to check with the farm before heading out!

A couple tips before you go:

• Make sure your dog has used the bathroom- If your dog is prone to marking, make sure he has used the bathroom and/or is wearing a belly band. Nobody wants to bring a Christmas tree into their home that smells like dog pee. That being said… be extra vigilant– Keep a close eye on your dog as you walk in the trees. And don’t forget waste bags, it’s always best to be prepared for anything.
• Families will be present- If small children excite your dog, just know there will probably be a lot of them around. A short leash and training treats will help keep your dog focused on you in a place with a lot of distractions.
• Take lots of photos- Christmas tree farms are a great place to get some holiday photos of your pup, with many having special setups for pictures. Most of these farms require a special permit or sitting fee for professional photographers so they may say something if you are shooting with anything more than a cell phone. Salt Lake Christmas Tree Farms That Allow Dogs

The Kinlands

The Kinlands (formerly Peterson Family Farm) in Riverton is well known for their dog friendly country Christmas experience. Not only do they sell a variety of fresh cut Christmas trees, The Kinlands prides itself on providing a curated experience meant to connect visitors with the land and evoke feelings of harmony.

In addition to their wonderful seasonal experience, the farm also has variety of skilled classes should you choose to visit without your pup. While The Kinlands old world market is open year round, Christmas tree sales begin just before Thanksgiving (check the website for specific dates) and continue through the holiday season or while supplies last.

The farm is open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 7pm and Sundays from 11am to 7pm. Well behaved, leashed dogs are welcome on the farm.

Green Ridge Christmas Trees

Green Ridge Christmas Tree Farm in Kaysville offers a variety of pre-cut and cut your own trees (availability varies year by year). With complimentary hot cocoa and candy canes at the farm, you’ll have no problem getting in the holiday spirit while shopping for a tree.

Trees available in past years have included Noble Firs, Nordmann Firs, Grand Firs, and Korean Firs but stock varies each year. Tree flocking is also available for those who’d like to add a special touch to their tree! Well behaved, leashed pups are welcome to visit this tree farm with their humans.

Schmidt’s Farm & Greenhouse

Schmidt’s Farm & Greenhouse in West Jordan offers a holiday tree farm as part of their highly anticipated seasonal events. Finding the perfect tree isn’t an issue as Schmidt’s typically offers a large variety of trees including Noble firs, Douglas firs, Grand firs, Balsam firs, and Nordmann firs.

If sustainability is important to your family this holiday season, visit Schmidt’s to find a living tree that can be planted after Christmas. The farm also offers their Candy Cane Lane, Santa’s goats, and a variety of scenes for taking photos. Professional photographers are able to use this space too, for a small booking fee.

You can visit the tree farm seasonally from Monday to Friday, 2pm to 9pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 9pm. Well behaved, leashed dogs are welcome at Schmidt’s. Christmas trees typically become available right before Thanksgiving, but check the website for exact dates.

Adam’s Acres

While Adam’s Acres is closer to Logan than to Salt Lake, this farm is a great option if you want to make a day of your Christmas tree selection. Located about an hour and twenty minutes north of Salt Lake, snow up here is much more likely and can add to the Christmas magic of picking out your tree.

Because this is a small family farm, tree availability and distribution can vary more greatly from year to year than other local farms. In order to get a tree from Adam’s Acres you must sign up early to get a reservation.

Cut Your Own with a Christmas Tree Permit!

Of course, if you’re interested in scouting and cutting down your own wild Christmas tree with your dog by your side, that is certainly an option! Permits are $10 each with a limit of two per household and can now be purchased online.

It is certainly the most frugal and adventurous way to select your holiday tree. Most tree permits are for pinyon pines, fir trees, and/or juniper trees. Dogs are typically able to enjoy public, BLM managed lands off leash, but be sure to be on the lookout for relevant signage in the area you are hiking in. Christmas tree permits go on sale at the beginning of November and are available until December 24th or until sold out.
